Police charge woman with child endangerment

A Butler woman was charged after she allegedly left eight children unattended at her home for more than two-and-a-half hours.

Jasmine N. Sherrell, 25, of Butler, was charged by city police with eight felony counts of child endangerment stemming from a Feb. 25 incident.

According to court documents, police were dispatched that day to a report of a toddler found wandering the streets. Police said they arrived at Butler Catholic School, which brought the child in from the cold.

“The toddler was not wearing shoes or pants,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

According to the National Weather Service forecast that day, the estimated high temperature was in the upper 30s, and the low temperature was in the upper 20s.

Police said they began canvassing the area, and they eventually found a home on College Street. According to police, the toddler said she had a dog named Max, and police found a dog outside the home with the name Max on its collar.

Police said a landlord was contacted and allowed officers in the home, where they found seven other children unattended with no adult present.

A short time after police entered the home, a woman arrived, claiming three of the children were hers. The other four as well as the wandering toddler belonged to her sister, Jasmine, she told police.

“(The woman) was unaware that Jasmine left the children unattended,” police said.

Sherrell's children's ages ranged from 1 to 9 years, and the sister's children ranged from 4 to 9 years.

Police said after a phone call from her sister, Sherrell returned to the home, where she was immediately taken to the city police station for an interview.

“Jasmine confessed to leaving the children at the house alone,” police said. “Jasmine went shopping at Walmart, then to a gas station and, finally, to Dollar General.”

A date for a preliminary hearing has yet to be set in the case, which will be heard before District Judge William Fullerton.
