The failed War on Drugs

Several excellent letters to the editor here have recently spelled out all that is wrong with the War on Drugs. This failed public policy of prohibition and incarceration has cost American society too much for far too long. Drugs are a tragedy and addiction will always sadly be with us; to exacerbate those effects through the imprisonment of millions of non-violent drug offenders is a grave mistake. Decriminalization and expanded treatment programs are long overdue. Let's start to get realistic about drug policy, folks.
