CHERRY TWP — Smethport’s running game was as advertised.

The Hubbers (5-1, 3-0 District 9, Region 4) came into Moniteau’s Luciano Plesakov Stadium on Friday night averaging 305 yards per game on the ground. They rushed for 394 yards and six touchdowns while cruising to a 40-15 District 9 football victory over the Warriors.

“That offense is really hard to stop,” Moniteau senior Liam Allison said. “They send everybody crashing forward at you and they attack from all different directions.”

Allison scored both of Moniteau’s touchdowns on long pass plays. He caught a 63-yard pass from Weston Cook as Allison was left all alone downfield for an easy score on the game’s first possession.

“We had a miscommunication, a breakdown on that play,” Smethport coach Ryan Yingling said. “Obviously, it came at a bad time, but I loved the way we responded.”

Smethport scored the game’s next five touchdowns before the Warriors (2-4, 1-1) dented the scoreboard again. This time, Cook called an audible at the line of scrimmage and delivered a short flare pass to Allison.

“There was nothing but green in front of me,” Allison said of the 61-yard touchdown play.

A two-point conversion pulled Moniteau within 32-15 with 8:49 still left in the third quarter.

“Great call at the line by our quarterback,” Moniteau head coach Clay Kohlmeyer said. “I loved the fact that Weston and Liam got on the same page there, read the defense and made the play work. That’s very encouraging.”

Smethport fullback Lucas Himes closed out the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds let in the third period. It was Himes’ third touchdown of the night, and he finished with 113 rushing yards.

“We were focusing on their other two backs, and that fullback gashed us,” Kohlmeyer said. “His long runs killed us.”

Himes had runs of 38 and 46 yards that led to a pair of Hubber scores in the first half.

Both teams possessed the ball once in the fourth quarter. Moniteau turned the ball over on downs at the Smethport 17. The Hubbers held the ball for the final 6:31 on eight successive running plays.

Jude Kisko led the Smethport ground game with 191 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He has 877 yards rushing on the season. Maddox Dickerson rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns.

Smethport attempted only five passes all night, two of those being shovel passes to Dickinson.

“We line up double-tight, double-wing and use a lot of misdirection,” Yingling said. “We switched to this offense halfway through last year, and have been working on refining it since June.

“For it to work this well against a defense as solid as Moniteau has ... I’m very pleased with this effort tonight.”

Kohlmeyer said the Smethport attack is “well-executed and very difficult to defend.”

Cook threw for 142 yards for Moniteau. Allison tallied 194 yards of total offense.

Moniteau travels to Otto-Eldred next Friday.

“This wasn’t us tonight,” Allison said. “We’re much better than this. We’re anxious to get back to practice, come out next Friday and show people who we really are.”
