CRANBERRY TWP — North Boundary Road in the township opened to traffic Monday afternoon.

According to an alert from the township, the road reopened just after 5:30 p.m. Monday. The road had been closed since earlier this summer as part of a reconstruction project that aimed to level the road by shaving off hilltops and filling in dips, to reduce what officials called a “roller-coaster ride” from Pinehurst Drive to Franklin Road. It also was intended to improve sight lines for drivers and to smooth and widen the road.

Crews also worked to implement a 5-foot paved shoulder on each side of the road in that section, and reconstructed the intersection of North Boundary and Franklin roads to make it a true 90-degree angle. Traffic islands are being added at the entrance to the Pinehurst residential development to slow traffic and make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road to North Boundary Park.

The project began in mid-July, with detours posted. Crews from Thomas Construction hit an unexpected snag when unforeseen utility work was needed. The road was expected to open several weeks ago, but the additional work delayed it. A new opening date was set for Friday, but paving continued into Monday.

With the road reopened, the speed limit is set at 25 mph, with drivers being urged to use caution as flaggers will be in place as the remainder of work is completed. That work includes the construction of concrete islands, final paving, guide rail installation, an asphalt trail and restoration.
