I registered to vote in Butler County in 1972, at 18, presenting my driver’s license to prove my identity. Nobody blinked when I registered as an Independent. I considered myself a moderate because I thought Republicans and Democrats both were too extreme in their philosophies.

Clearly, that divide is more evident today.

In 2010, I registered Republican to vote for Mike Kelly in that primary. I have met Mike several times and taught his children at Butler Senior High School, one of whom became my teaching colleague. I thought Mike deserved a chance.

Since 2011, Mike has done things beneficial for Pennsylvanians. However, his support of the current national administration appalls me.

I know little of his challenger, Justin Wagner. I read The Eagle, the Post-Gazette and other sources, for information. As a former journalist and journalism teacher, I find your coverage fair and independent. That, too, is too rare.

In November, I will make an informed choice, but at this time, I cannot vote for the status quo.
