Firefighters work Friday to put out a fire in an apartment at Old Plank Estates apartments in Butler Township.

Several residents of Old Plank Estates apartments were displaced after a fire Friday afternoon.

Fire departments were dispatched to 160 Old Plank Estates, off Old Plank Road in Butler Township for a structure fire at 2:17 p.m.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist 36 children and adults from 12 apartments with lodging for the next day or two as crews air out the building, according to Fire Marshal Larry Christy.

Christy said when fire units arrived on the scene, they found a bedroom of an upper apartment in the building fully engulfed.

The fire extended into the hallway of the structure, and responders put out the flames quickly, he said.

Christy estimated that the building sustained $10,000 in damage, and the residents lost between $5,000 and $6,000 worth of contents in the apartment.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said the most probable cause that fire crews are looking at is a multi-plug adapter in the room, with an air freshener and lights plugged in. One of those items failed, causing the fire.

Butler Township, Butler City, South Butler, Penn Township and Adams Area fire departments and Butler Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.

“We had a good response from the fire companies,” he said, saying nearly 25 firefighters responded to the scene.
