Moraine and McConnells Mill events for September
Some new events have been added to the schedule for Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks.
Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m.: Join the Moraine State Park naturalist at the Pleasant Valley launch area for the “Owl Prowl.” Learn about the owls that call the park home before embarking on a bird-watching night hike. Bring a flashlight if you have one.
Sept. 10, 4:30 p.m.: Join Moraine State Park staff on a guided kayaking tour of the Porters Cove area and the various species of fish that reside there. A brief introduction to kayaking will be offered on shore before the tour. Kayaks and gear will be provided, or you can bring your own. This event is for ages 12 and up only. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.
Sept. 12, 11 a.m.: Muddy Creek Oil Well history demonstration. The historic Bessemer oil well at Moraine State Park is open to the public for a demonstration on the second Saturday of each month through October.
Sept. 13, 1 p.m.: All Girl Scouts are invited to explore all that Moraine State Park has to offer, including paddling along Lake Arthur and archery lessons. The event is open to Girl Scouts ages 10 and up.
Sept. 26-27: Heritage Festival. McConnells Mill State Park hosts the 33rd annual event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Portersville-Prospect. The festival is a celebration of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the park’s historic gristmill was operating full-time. Visitors can see live demonstrations of the mill in action, and witness live arts and crafts demonstrations, including a Civil War reenactment, along with many other activities.
