De Paul food cupboard moves to bigger space

More than 700 families get aid

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul food cupboard moved June 1 to 157 N. Elm St. because it ran out of room at its former location at 400 E. Locust St.

The food cupboard serves low-income families in the Butler and Lyndora areas.

"We are presently helping over 700 people a month," said Fred McClaine, president and administrator of the society.

The cupboard buys food monthly from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, working through the Butler County Community Action Agency.

The organization is partially dependent upon donations. All food and nonfood items, and monetary donations, are accepted.

Food items are not restricted to canned or dry goods.

"We have a great deal of refrigeration and freezer space," McClaine said. "So all food items are welcome."

The food cupboard, which has been in operation for more than 30 years, has an upstairs application office that ensures privacy for applicants.

"A lot of people who've never asked for help are very self-conscious about it," McClaine said. "Our office gives them total privacy."

Applicants are restricted to once-a-month food cupboard visits; however they can take their pick between 14 different cupboards in the county.

"There are countywide controls set, so we can reach everybody," McClaine said.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul also offers help with utilities and other financial assistance, and provides vouchers to its thrift store in the Greater Butler Mart on Route 8.

The food cupboard is open from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays.

For information, call the office at 724-287-3994.
