Driver charged in May accident; motorized bicycle rider struck

Butler police have charged the driver of a vehicle that allegedly struck and injured a bicyclist in May.

Hannah M. Hines, 22, of Butler Township was charged Friday with accidents involving injury, a misdemeanor, and driving with a suspended license, a summary.

Police said they were called about 9:50 p.m. May 20 for a vehicle crash on the 500 block of North McKean Street. But when officers got there, they could not find anyone or any vehicle involved.

Later that night, police said, they got a call reporting that the alleged victim, a 21-year-old Butler man, was at Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries in the accident.

He told police that he had been riding a motorized bicycle when a vehicle struck his bike at the intersection of North McKean and East Fulton streets.

The man recounted that he was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle before landing on the pavement.

He said the driver stopped, and asked him if he was OK, before she left as he was attempting to get her information. “She claimed that she could not stay on scene because she did not have a license,” he told police, according to charging documents.

The victim called 911 June 14 to report seeing the suspect's vehicle on St. Paul Street in Butler. Police subsequently contacted the owner, who told them that Hines was in possession of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Hines is facing charges by summons, and her preliminary hearing is set Sept. 14.

Online court records did not list an attorney for her, and she could not be reached for comment.
