CONNOQUENESSING TWP — A man was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with injuries suffered early this morning in a head-on crash on Route 68.

The man’s name was not immediately released by state police, who are investigating the collision just after 5:30 a.m.

It was not known if there were any other injuries.

The collision happened near White Oak Springs Presbyterian Church on the part of the road that longtime locals know as “Oil Well Bend.”

The driver was still inside his car when emergency crews arrived, said Dave Bestwick, assistant fire chief for Butler Township Fire District 3. The injured man was conscious and talking.

The driver of the pickup, an unidentified man, was able to get out on his own and apparently was not injured. A passenger in the truck also got out and did not appear to be hurt, authorities said.

A STAT MedEvac helicopter landed near the Connoquenessing Township Building and flew the driver of the car to UPMC Presbyterian.

Both vehicles sustained moderate front-end damage and had to be towed.

The road was reduced to one lane for about one hour. The Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company assisted with traffic control.
