Neubert: July 4th includes strong tradition of running events
Judging by the “too numerous to mention” race calendar listings, running on the 4th of July is a popular tradition in Western Pennsylvania. Here are two local favorites that celebrate the day with community, patriotism and fun.
Firecracker 5K and 1-Mile has raced through Zelienople on the 4th of July for 15 years. This year’s event is presented by Experience Butler County as part of its Celebration 250 Festivities.
"The Firecracker 5K is a great way for people of all ages and abilities to celebrate Independence Day while supporting one of our community's greatest assets, Zelienople Community Park," said Race Director Joella Baker of Get Fit Families. A portion of race proceeds benefit the park, a hub of activity on any day.
Firecracker 1-Mile starts in Zelie Park at 8 a.m. with a flat and fast loop around town. The 5K, which features a challenging climb up Cemetery Hill, begins when the mile run/walk is complete, at approximately 8:15-8:20. This gives runners an opportunity to complete both distances if desired.
"Whether you're aiming for a personal best, walking with friends, pushing a stroller, or participating with your dog, this event offers something for everyone," Baker said.
In addition to its 15th anniversary, this year’s Firecracker 5K also celebrates the 250th Anniversary of our country’s Declaration of Independence. All participants in Firecracker 5K and 1 Mile will receive a finisher medal to commemorate the occasion. Competitive awards include medals for first three male and female finishers in both 5K and 1-Mile and age groups from 8U through 70+ in 5K and 6U-70+ in 1-Mile.
Firecracker 5K is the first event of a day of activities throughout Zelienople. The annual 4th of July Parade begins at 11 a.m. on Main Street. There will be family activities, entertainment, vendors and patriotic celebrations throughout the town all day. There’s also a free swim in Zelienople Park’s Pool until 4 p.m. and fireworks at dusk.
You may register for Firecracker 5K and 1-Mile online at or on race day in Zelienople Park beginning at 7 a.m. with discounts for families of 3 or 4. Organizers request parking in designated lots, not on the streets which are part of the race course.
Hampton Rotary Club Firecracker 5K has run through and around Hampton Community Park for 20 years. The event begins this Saturday at 8:30 a.m.at the park’s ALCOA Pavilion in support of various educational and charitable activities sponsored by the Hampton Rotary Club such as weekly Meals on Wheels and scholarships for Hampton High School students.
The Hampton Rotary 5K course is challenging, especially the hill leading out of the park to Hampton Middle School. In 2025, the event added a level walk-only course which starts shortly after the 5K.
This year, both courses will be slightly different due to completed park renovations. The 1-mile walk will feature the scenic and level paved trail entirely within park boundaries. Dogs and strollers are welcome.
Over the years, there have been a number of fast 5K finishes in spite of the challenging course. In 2010, Trevor Van Ackeren set the men’s course record of 16:20. Last year, local runner Ava Spagnolli set the women’s record of 19:22. The 5K awards medals for first 3 male and female finishers as well as top 3 in age groups from 8U through 60+. Finishers in both distances earn participation medals made by Hampton’s A.W. Beattie Career Center students and everyone can share post-race Pasquale’s pizza and drinks.
Online registration for Hampton Rotary Firecracker 5K and 1K is open until 4 p.m. on July 3rd. Day-of-event rego opens at 6 a.m. on July 4th in Hampton Park. There should be enough commemorative T-shirts for all participants, but sizes may be limited.
