Miller Minutes: ‘Share what you love with your kids’

My father is what we call an audiophile: a lover of music who is specific about how they listen to music.

We have a huge sound system in my living room with quality speakers, a record player, multidisc CD player, Bluetooth hookup and more. There was a distinction between a “headphone song” and an “out loud” song. Some live versions are better than recorded versions. Remastered versions are best. I always have the most current car radio with customizable settings. You get the drift.

Music became my special interest because of my dad’s influence on me. I’m sure many others can say something similar.

We imitate what we admire, which means that if you’re a father, mother, sister or brother, someone smaller is probably watching you. Picking up on what you like and taking it with them.

As we move through the world, we never know who we influence for better or worse. This isn’t meant to scare you. Rather, I hope it’s encouraging that the art we like is alive only as long as it lives in us. It gains new life in the next generation, but only if you’re willing to share it.

So, to the fathers of Butler County: Share what you love with your kids. And children, since you are the future, listen to what they share, and maybe take them to a local event as a thank you.
