Late term abortion
DJ writes that in cases in which remaining pregnant could be potentially dangerous to a mother, as delineated in my and Jared of Butler's posts, that "all possible efforts should be made to save the child/fetus" and that if either the fetus or the mother should have to die, it should be God that chooses. I object to this idea on many counts but primarily because I do not believe a fetus has any claim or right to life. It is only the mother's life that matters and if a late term abortion is the only way for the mother to be healthy (or alive, in some cases) and she wishes to proceed with the procedure, the law should respect her sovereignty over her body. In fact, earlier in pregnancy a physician would be guilty of malpractice (and immorality) if the patient was not offered the option of abortion in a situation where the mother's health was threatened by remaining pregnant.
