Late term abortion: definitions
Kevin of Renfrew writes "Partial birth abortion means the aborting of a fetus that can survive outside the womb." This is not the correct definition of partal birth abortion. Medically speaking, partial birth abortion is not really a term even used. The term "Partial Birth Abortion" was first used by US Congressman Charles Canady. The procedure that has been banned by the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act is a procedure known as intact dilation and extraction in which the majority of the fetus is removed intact from the cervix prior to the abortion procedure. This procedure is used after 21 weeks of gestation. Viability is currently at approximately 24 weeks, so not all fetuses can survive outside the mother at the time this procedure is performed. Moreover, late term abortion is often performed for severe fetal deformities that are incompatible with life outside the uterus. Kevin of Renfrew's definition is entirely wrong.
