Derrick Eggleton granted a rematch. He did not grant a victory.

A Butler High School junior, Eggleton won the main event of the annual Butler Cubs Amateur Boxing Show Saturday night in the Cubs gym. He scored a split decision over Jose Jauregui of Kelly Pavlik’s Championship Boxing gym in Youngstown, Ohio.

Jauregui (6-2) was trying to avenge his only previous amateur defeat, a split decision to Eggleton in Pittsburgh a few months ago. Instead, he met with the same fate.

Eggleton (5-3) landed a solid left early in the bout, then knocked Jauregui into the ropes with a hard right in the second round. The outcome appeared in question until the final 20 seconds of the three-round bout, when Eggleton got the best of a wild flurry of punches the two exchanged.

Eggleton said he wanted to be aggressive.

“He’s a big, strong guy with a lot of power,” he said. “Yeah, the last flurry was big. I did a lot of running to prepare for this fight and was strong at the end. I had better agility and used that to my advantage.

“He got his rematch. There won’t be another. It’s done.”

Cubs boxing trainer Bill Wolfe lauded Eggleton’s efforts.

“That kid (Jauregui) wanted this win so badly,” Wolfe said. “I give Derrick credit for giving him the rematch. Derrick always fights up in class and puts on a show. He’s a tough kid.”

The other five Cubs fighters on the card endured tough losses. Karns City graduate Taite Beighley — an 1,100-point scorer for Gremlins basketball — lost by decision in his amateur debut. So, too, did Moniteau senior C.J. McKinnis.

Seneca Valley senior Riley McGee (6-3) lost a split decision to Evan Cupps (16-10) of Northside Athletic Club in the co-main event.

“It was a 50-50 fight,” McGee said. “If I had to do it over, I’d increase my volume of punches in the third round. That probably cost me.”

McGee, who trains once or twice a week at Cubs gym, is headed to Edinboro University to compete in track and cross country. That will likely put his boxing career on hold.

“We lost some close ones tonight that could have gone the other way,” Wolfe said. “I thought Riley won every round. I thought C.J. won two of the three rounds. The judges saw differently.”

McKinnis, who described his bout as “a close, fair fight,” plans to get in the ring again.

“This is only the beginning,” he said.

Noah and Isaac Schnur, brohers who train out of Tom Cammisa’s gym in Butler, dropped their boxing debuts. Isaac, 12, lost a split decision and Noah (15) was stopped in the second round.

They’ve been training under Cammisa for a year in kickboxing.

“Switching over to boxing is an adjustment, and this was their first time,” Cammisa said. “I’m proud of their efforts. I’m confident they’ll fight again.”

Woife plans to put Eggleton and “maybe three others” on a boxing card scheduled for June 20 at the North Side Athletic Club.

The Butler Cubs boxing program has produced more than 80 champions in local, state, regional and national competitions since 1976.
