Miller Minutes: 'The success of our tiny town also depends on you supporting your neighbors'

Miller Minutes

I bought a printed subscription to Vogue magazine after watching “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”

You may be asking, “Why Molly? Print is dead.” While I agree, I wish this were not reality.

If you’re reading this sentence, it’s because you bought a Butler Eagle, subscribe online, or are accessing the content on social media because someone copied and pasted it into the comments. If you’re a member of the last group, you are not paying for the work I just put in.

Because my work is rooted in the written word, I think “The Devil Wears Prada 2” perfectly depicts the crisis media is facing.

In the first scene, Anne Hathaway’s character is fired from her newspaper job via text, two seconds before receiving a writing award. This is the harsh reality for many of my friends who have been laid off due to budget cuts. Journalists put in good work, but the paper shrinks because nobody pays for it.

Know this: with the collapse of local journalism comes the collapse of society itself. I would much rather be told what is going on by someone who a) knows how to communicate, and b) lives in my community, than some random bloke working for a media corporation.

So, if you’re looking for something to do, I’m going to biasedly encourage you to watch “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and buy a subscription to the Butler Eagle so you can continue being regaled by my witty repartee and knowledge of local events.

Speaking of, the success of our tiny town also depends on you supporting your neighbors at the events below, so fit that into your schedule, too.
