Jerry McElhinny
Born Oct. 10, 1937, Jerry Robert McElhinny, 88, of Evans City, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2026, surrounded by loving family.
He was, is and will be cherished by his wife, Marilynn (Richwalls) McElhinny; and six daughters, Bonnie McElhinny (Gary Coupland), Kathleen Skog (Erik), Rita McClelland (Buddy), Tammy Edinger (George), Laura Kellar (Karl) and Elaine McElhinny. He was, is and will be loved by his grandchildren, Megan, Jake, Anders, Rolf, Emily, Levi, Sarah, Zane, Tonya, Gretchen, Jeb, Elvis and Zoe; his great-grandchildren, Amalia and Cormac; and his sister, Patrice Hughes.
Marilynn and Jerry were married on May 8, 1965. They met at a square dance and were happily married for 60 years and 364 days. He was a farmer, working on and co-owning McElhinny farm, bought just before the Great Depression by his father, and continued into the second generation by Jerry, Paul and Zeno, and into the third with nephew, John. He delivered eggs from the poultry farm for many years in Pittsburgh. He knew how to grow the best sweet corn — none of his daughters could ever happily eat any other. Many people buying the corn at farmer’s markets and retail stands agreed and asked for McElhinny corn by name.
By working beside their early-rising, hard-working Dad in the cornfields and at the markets in their teens, Jerry’s six daughters learned that hard work and a sense of responsibility would benefit them throughout their lives. (Thanks Dad — we remember the light coming on at 4 a.m. Rise and shine). Whenever one of his kids or grandkids was headed off on a trip, Dad would say, “Watch your onion.”
Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Elizabeth McElhinny; his brothers and sisters, Paul McElhinny, Isabelle McElhinny, Nancy Bogan, Zeruiah Moore, Samuel McElhinny, Elizabeth Darling, Ronald McElhinny, Zeno McElhinny, Daniel McElhinny and John McElhinny; and by his granddaughter, Serena Edinger.
“Watch your onion, Dad.”
