Sandra Hutchens

Hutchens

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra “Sandy/Gunny” Lee (Campbell) Philips Hutchens, 83, of Butler, who passed away Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026.

Sandy was born at home April 10, 1943, and was the daughter to Ruby and Jack Campbell of Butler. She graduated from Butler High School in 1961 as a member of the first class on the hill.

Throughout her life, Sandy held a variety of positions, beginning with Lloyd Johnson through Deco while she was still in high school. She later worked at Nationwide, served as a secretary for attorneys Doerr and Perkins, operated a housecleaning business, drove a school bus, worked as a real estate agent and spent the final 15 years of her career with the Butler Mental Health Association.

Sandy had a love for clothing and shoes and found joy in baking — especially making Christmas cookies — as well as knitting, crocheting and sewing. She devoted more than 25 years to serving as a Girl Scout leader, making a lasting difference in the lives of many young girls. She also loved her iPad and especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in their sporting events, including basketball, baseball and wrestling matches.

Sandy treasured lifelong friendships and was a member of a card club that began in 1964. Of the original members, three survive, Donna Leary, Annie King and Carol Geibel.

Sandy is survived by her beloved husband, Donald Lee Hutchens; her three children, Dawn (Mark) Caudill, Craig (Lynda) Philips and Aimee (Jim) Cestrone; five grandchildren, Blake, Korey, and Mylo Caudill, and Paige and Zane Cestrone; and one great-grandchild, Kase Caudill, all of whom knew and loved her as “Gunny,” a special name that reflected the affection and place she held in their lives. She was also blessed with three stepchildren and nine step-grandchildren.

Sandy will be remembered for her many talents, her sense of humor, her dedication to her family and community, the friendships she cherished and the love she shared with those around her. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.

HUTCHENS — Family and friends of Sandra “Sandy/Gunny” Lee (Campbell) Philips Hutchens, who died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at SPENCER D. GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 140 New Castle Road, Butler. A closing prayer will immediately follow in the funeral home.
