Slater

Helene “Cricket” Slater, 100, of East Brady passed away Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026.

Born Aug. 2, 1926, in East Brady, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaretta (Lowther) Brown. She was the wife of the late Roy “Mike” Slater who preceded her in death.

Cricket graduated from East Brady High School and was a very active member of her community. She was a beloved resident of East Brady and was well known for her musical talent, playing all types of music by ear for various events in town and in the area. She grew up in a house filled with music and continued that through her life; she could often be heard playing piano/organ duets with her husband, Mike.

She was the oldest member of the E.B. First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir and had been actively involved. Cricket was a woman of faith who loved her church family.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and became Worthy Matron in 1965 and State Grand Organist in 1987, traveling and playing throughout the state. She was also a member of the Clarion County Garden Club. In 2016, she was named East Brady’s Citizen of the Year. She loved her hometown of East Brady. Cricket never heard a joke she did not want to share.

Surviving are her two daughters, Ann (Roger) McCauley of Franklin, Pa., and Carrie Jo (Marc) Anderson of Butler. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Mary Ann McCauley, Ellen (Brian) Shidemantle, Elizabeth Jack, Sara Lewis, John Lewis and Adrienne Benda. Completing the family are five great-grandchildren, Adaline Helene and Brooks Shidemantle, Levi Jack, Jaxon Magnani and Santino Benda; her sister-in-law, Alma Slater Drennen, and several nieces and nephews survive.

In addition to her parents and husband, Cricket was preceded in death by her friend, Bill Norton; her brother, Harry Brown Jr.; her beloved sister and her husband, Gretta Gene and Ted Miller; her stepmother, Maude Bowser Brown; and stepsister, Jean Snyder.

The Slater family would like to acknowledge the staff at Life Stories of Newhaven Court and her special friend, Pam Moore.
