Pitt rallies past Detroit for 74-61 hoops win

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh freshman guard James Robinson spent the first half futilely chasing Detroit’s Ray McCallum all over the Petersen Events Center floor.

Once Robinson decided it was time for McCallum and the Titans to do the chasing, Detroit simply couldn’t keep up.

Robinson and Talib Zanna combined for 14 points during a game-turning second-half run as the Panthers rallied past the Titans 74-61 on Saturday night.

“It’s kind of easy for me when I have a lot of other great players on the court,” Robinson said. “I kind of rely on them a lot. They kind of keep me calm out there.”

Funny, sometimes it looks like it’s the other way around. The 18-year-old plays with a composure that belies his age, and when the Panthers needed him, he provided a number of big shots as Pitt (7-1) won its third straight.

“He’s mature beyond a freshman,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “We’re fortunate. He’s got great feel, great patience and he’s unselfish and he passes it on throughout his teammates.”

Robinson scored nine of his 11 points in the second half and added six points and four rebounds for Pitt. Zanna led the Panthers with 16 points and Tray Woodall added 14 points and three assists as the Panthers recovered from a 13-point, first-half deficit to win going away.

Lamar Patterson scored 12 points to go with seven assists and five rebounds for the Panthers.

“I think we all just came together and locked in and got stops and get our transition baskets,” Woodall said. “It was just consistently getting stops.”

Pitt needed those stops after Detroit (2-4) took a 13-point lead in the first half. The Titans confused the Panthers with a zone defense that made Pitt appear lost at times and rode the McCallum’s hot shooting at the other end of the floor to put the Panther on their heels.

McCallum scored 17 of his 24 points in the first half, but found the going much tougher in the second half while getting constant attention from a series of defenders, including reserve Cameron Wright. The sophomore came off the bench to start the second half after Woodall picked up three first-half fouls and used his 6-foot-4 wingspan to disrupt McCallum’s rhythm.
