Father of 6 dies in motorcycle crash
ALLEGHENY TWP — A father of six was killed and his girlfriend seriously injured Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle they were riding crashed in northern Butler County.
State police suspect Lawrence Greg Tumlin Jr., 34, of Ellwood City was speeding when he lost control of his 2013 Harley-Davidson cycle on Foxburg Road in Allegheny Township.
Tumlin died instantly in the wreck about 4:30 p.m. His passenger, live-in girlfriend, 31-year-old Kristen Michelle Yurik, suffered a broken leg and apparent internal injuries, according to emergency officials.
Yurik was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. Her condition was not known this morning.
Authorities said Tumlin and Yurik had spent part of the day in Foxburg, Clarion County, with another couple. Both couples had traveled there on motorcycles.
Tumlin was westbound on Foxburg Road, driving “at a high rate of speed,” according to a police report, when he came upon a curve.
Authorities noted road and weather conditions were not factors in the crash.
“It’s a back country road and he may not have been familiar with it,” Rick Amsler, chief of the Parker Volunteer Fire Company, said of Tumlin. “There’s a bit of a turn but it looked like he went straight through it.”
The cycle traveled onto the north berm and hit a small mound of dirt and a drainage ditch, police said. The bike was sent airborne and crashed into a series of trees near the intersection with Parker Pike.
The other couple traveling with Tumlin and Yurik came upon the wreck and contacted 911, authorities said.
By the time medical crews from Emlenton Ambulance and Knox Ambulance reached Tumlin, he was dead. His body was found on the overturned motorcycle.
He likely died instantly, said Butler County Coroner William Young III, who pronounced Tumlin dead at the scene.
Firefighters had to use a saw to cut away tree limbs before they could rescue Yurik, who was lying next to the wrecked bike, Amsler said.
Neither Tumlin nor Yurik was wearing a helmet.
Yurik was conscious before an ambulance drove her about one-half mile away to a church at Six Points, where a helicopter landed and flew her to the hospital for treatment.
A truck driver, Tumlin is survived by three sons and three daughters. The Marshall Funeral Home in Ellwood City is handling his funeral arrangements.
