Mars gets wild win
Austin Rocke scored with 3:51 remaining in overtime as the Mars soccer team beat South Fayette 4-3 in a wild WPIAL 3A quarterfinal match at Ambridge Thursday night.
It was Rocke's second goal of the match and sends the Planets to the WPIAL semifinals against West Allegheny, a 5-0 winner over Kiski, Monday at a site and time to be determined.
Upper St. Clair 4, Butler 1 — Tate Mohney's goal tied the match at 1-1 a minute into the second half, but Upper St. Clair scored three more goals to eliminate the Golden Tornado from the WPIAL 4A playoffs.
Butler finished the season 11-5-2.
Volleyball
Hannah Rowe had 23 kills and Kerrie Fitzpatrick added 41 assists as Knoch gutted out a 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 25-17 win over Ambridge in the second round of the WPIAL 3A playoffs at home.
The Knights (19-0) struggled in the second set against a section foe, but bounced back with a rousing victory in the third to seize control.
Fitzpatrick also had 16 service points for Knoch, which will play Kiski Tuesday in the quarterfinals at a site and time to be determined.
Freeport 3, Waynesburg 0 — The Yellowjackets got eight kills from Ally Dejidas and Lauren Lampus to win at home, 25-17, 25-10, 25-18 to open the WPIAL 2A playoffs.
Isabella Russo added seven kills and Cora Crytzer came off the bench to log 17 digs for Freeport (14-2), which will play Seton LaSalle in the second round of the playoffs Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
North Catholic 3, Burrell 0 — The Trojanettes earned a sweep in the first round of the WPIAL 2A playoffs at home.
North Catholic will play Derry Tuesday in the next round at a site and time to be determined.
Coudersport 3, Union 0 — Marli Hawk had eight digs and Emma Pritchard six kills, but the Damsels' season came to a close with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-16 loss in the District 9 Class A playoffs.
Morgan Cumberland added 13 sets for Union (12-9).
Coudersport will play A-C Valley in the next round Tuesday.
Armstrong 3, Mars 0 — The Planets season came to a close with this WPIAL 3A loss to the No. 2 seed.
