SV wrestlers shine at POWERade
Seneca Valley wrestlers Alejandro Herrera-Rondon and Dylan Chappell enjoyed impressive runs Saturday at the prestigious POWERade Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.
Herrera-Rondon won the 113-pound weight class while Chappell placed second at 106 pounds.
Herrera-Rondon, ranked No. 4 at 113 pounds nationally by FloWrestling, defeated No. 2 ranked Kurt McHenry of Saint Paul (Md.) 2-1 in the 30-second tiebreaker round of the 113-pound finals. Both wrestlers managed an escape in regulation, but neither scored in overtime.
Herrera-Rondon chose the down position against McHenry in the first 30-second tiebreaker and escaped in 15 seconds, then scored the win when he held McHenry down for the entire 30 seconds.
Earlier in the tournament, Herrera-Rondon won matches by a pin in 39 seconds, a technical fall (16-0) in 5:38, and by decisions of 10-1 and 2-1. He was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler.
Chappell dropped a 5-3 decision to Gary Steen of Reynolds in the 106-pound title match. Earlier in the tourney, Chappell won by pins in 1:12 ,5:46 and 4:46. He also won by a 5-0 decision.
The Raiders' Nick Montalbano placed eighth at 152 pounds.
In other action:
Butler placed third out of 30 teams over the weekend at the Southmoreland Tournament. Senior Jack Codispot at 160 pounds and freshman Cooper Baxter at 170 won their respective weight classes for the Golden Tornado.
Greensburg Salem won the tourney with 162 points, followed by Mount Pleasant with 153 and Butler with 151.5.
Codispot and Baxter both came from behind to win decisions in the finals. Codispot decisioned Hunter Milligan of Albert Gallation 8-5 and Baxter defeated Marshall Vantassell of Union City 4-2.
Sophomore Nate McMaster placed third at 132 pounds for Butler. Junior Caleb Hartung was fourth at 220, sophomore Clayton Dressler 5th at 120, sophomore Steven Green sixth at 145 and sophomore Nick Schaukowitsch seventh at 106.
Girls Basketball
Emma McDermott scored eight of her 13 points in overtime Saturday as the Slippery Rock girls basketball team defeated Cleveland Catholic, 56-51, in double OT.
McDermott sank two treys in the extra sessions. Anna Kadlubek paced the Rockets with 16 points. The game was part of the Farrell holiday tournament.
Chantel Barnett led Cleveland Catholic with 24 points.
