On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Dr. Joseph Thaddeus “Doc” Cunningham, of Saxonburg, passed peacefully into the loving arms of our Lord, Jesus, at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Catherine Cunningham and Mark Wiser, in Shippenville, Pa.

Dr. Cunningham was a respected educator, having devoted his career to the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School. He served as a teacher and principal before becoming the executive director, a role he held with distinction for 16 years. In addition to his work there, he also contributed to the academic community as an adjunct faculty member at Butler County Community College, where he influenced many students with his passion for learning and teaching.

Joseph was preceded in death by his loving parents, Joseph and Alice Cunningham.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication through his surviving family: three beloved daughters, Colleen (Jason) Abel, of Culpeper, Va., Emily (Adam) Lucas, of Pittsburgh, and Anna (Alex) Campbell, of Pittsburgh. His cherished brother, John Cunningham, of Pittsburgh; and sister, Dr. Catherine Cunningham and husband, Mark Wiser, of Shippenville, remain to honor his memory; along with his nephews, Timothy (Jayda) Cunningham, of Pittsburgh, and Ryan Clark, of Shippenville. He is also survived by seven treasured grandchildren, Connor, Gunner, Eleanor, Jude, Rose, Isaac and Desmond.

CUNNINGHAM — A Mass of Christian burial for Dr. Joseph Thaddeus “Doc” Cunningham, who died Thursday, April 16, 2026, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 715 Main St., Clarion, with the Rev. Jason Feigh serving as celebrant.

Inurnment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of GOBLE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 330 Wood St., Clarion.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Hospital or the Clarion Forest VNA Hospice, reflecting Joseph’s enduring compassion and generosity.
