19-year-old SRU student receives top state academic honor
A 19-year-old about to graduate college is receiving an award for academic excellence from Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.
Abby Becker, a Slippery Rock University student graduating this spring, was named the 2026 recipient of the Syed R. Ali-Zaidi Award for Academic Excellence. The state system’s board of governors honored Becker at its quarterly meeting Thursday, April 16, and present her with a $2,500 award.
Becker is a student in SRU’s Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics, majoring in mathematics, with minors in statistics and business administration.
“Abby is a powerful example of our students’ talent and determination,” Christopher Fiorentino, chancellor of the state system, said in a news release. “Across our universities, students are taking on big challenges and achieving at a high level. Abby’s drive, paired with academic excellence and professional readiness, embodies the state system’s value and impact.”
The state system consists of 10 universities and over 83,000 students. The Ali-Zaidi Award is presented annually to one graduating senior from a state system university who demonstrates exceptional academic achievement and leadership.
Becker is member of SRU’s Honors College. The college said she has excelled in one of the university’s most demanding academic pathways and will complete it this spring.
At SRU, Becker’s academic program combines advanced theoretical coursework with applied training in actuarial science, statistics, finance and data analytics.
In addition, Becker passed two Society of Actuaries exams — Probability and Financial Mathematics — within six months, “a rare achievement for an undergraduate student.” Each exam typically requires hundreds of hours of preparation and serves as a key credential for entering the actuarial profession.
Becker received praise from state system officials and SRU president Karen Riley for her dedication and intellect.
“Winning this award is really exciting, and it shows how great Slippery Rock University is,” Becker said in the news release. “Yes, I put in the work, but I’ve benefited from so many amazing people and resources here at SRU.”
