Middlesex Twp. greenlights new license plate readers

MIDDLESEX TWP — Supervisors voted Wednesday to collaborate with the Butler County District Attorney's office to install license plate monitors at the Route 8/Route 228 intersection.

“It's technology that sits on top of the traffic signal systems,” said Adam Hartwig, township manager.

The units read vehicle types and license plates, which allow law enforcement officials to monitor stolen and wanted vehicles and assist with such things as Amber Alerts.

Hartwig clarified it's illegal to use such software for red light enforcement, except in the Philadelphia area.

Installing the units will fill a “gap” along Route 8 and Route 228, according to Hartwig.

“Right now, the technology is in use in Adams Township, Allegheny County and Butler Township,” Hartwig said. “It will be a regional asset.”

According to Hartwig, the township's been approached by county District Attorney Richard Goldinger to install four units on the traffic signals at the Route 8/Route 228 intersection for traffic going west.

The district attorney's office is even interested in covering about 75% of the cost, according to Hartwig. This would be about $9,300.

“The remaining portion of about $3,100 is something we would be responsible for,” he said.

The systems would be usable by Middlesex Township as well as other local departments. Hartwig said he's specifically been working with Cranberry Township police on planning for the units.

The system would become a regional “tool,” according to Hartwig. He said the involved parties are prepared to get the installation process underway immediately.

Township supervisors expressed their support for the project.

Hartwig indicated the project could be expanded to include other parts of Route 228. The supervisors suggested waiting to see how well this system works.

“Let's see what it all consists of,” said Supervisor Donald Marshall. “At least we're filling a gap.”
