District may offer college courses

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The Slippery Rock School District is moving toward offering Butler County Community College courses to its students.

Superintendent Alfonso Angelucci is proposing a partnership with the college that the school board will consider at its Jan. 11 meeting.

The partnership would allow Slippery Rock High School teachers to teach BC3 courses to juniors and seniors. The classes would be taught at the high school but would be scheduled for before or after school or on Saturdays.

The students would pay $423 tuition for each three-credit class plus the cost of a textbook. The school district’s only cost would be offering the use of its building. BC3 would have the responsibility of screening the teachers to ensure that they are qualified.

BC3 already has a similar partnership with several other schools in the region.

It would only be offered to students with a minimum grade-point average, Angelucci said.

Taking college courses early gives students a chance to get a “head start” on pursuing a degree at BC3, or possibly elsewhere.

“It’s a great opportunity for our kids,” he said.
