BUFFALO TWP — One milestone down, two to go.

Freeport senior goalkeeper Abigail Legin recorded the 500th save of her high school career Tuesday night as the Yellowjackets posted a 14-1 WPIAL Section 2-2A girls lacrosse victory over Knoch at Freeport Stadium.

Legin entered the match needing nine saves to reach the coveted mark. She wound up stopping 10 of 11 Knoch shots, many from point-blank range.

“She’s the perfect anchor for our defense,” Freeport coach Victoria Turchick said. “Abby gets in front of everything. Five hundred saves is a lot, and she makes some great stops. She reads shots very well.”

Legin never played lacrosse before her freshman year. She’s been a goalkeeper from her first day of practice.

“My older brother (Nathan) was a senior when I was a freshman,” Legin said. “He played goalie for the boys team and talked me into giving it a try.

“I knew I needed nine saves to reach 500. I knew my teammates had my back, too. They always do. Just practice and the team playing well around me made this happen for me.”

Legin and junior midfielder Macey Edwards are Freeport’s co-captains. Edwards scored five goals Tuesday and has a team-leading 17 tallies — sharing that honor with teammate Sofia Glass — on the young season. Junior Alyssa Lovren scored four goals and added four assists.

Edwards and Lovren raved about their goalkeeper.

“She’s like family to us,” Edwards said. “Abby communicates so well with us. She sees what’s happening in front of her and lets us know what’s going on.”

“She makes the difference for us,” Lovgren said. “She holds the team together when we’re in the defensive end. I’m so glad we have her back there.”

Edwards, who has been playing lacrosse since third grade, needs 17 goals to reach 100 in her high school career. No Freeport girl has ever reached the century mark.

“Guaranteed. She’ll get there,” Turchick said of Edwards. “That girl just goes and gets the ball. If there’s a 50-50 ball in the ground, she’s gonna get it. And she can cut it loose.

“Macey’s more than just a scorer for us. She contributes on defense, in the middle. ... She’s all over the field.”

Edwards played lacrosse on the youth boys team for four years as Freeport had no elementary school girls team.

“I learned a lot of different shots at a young age,” she said. “That definitely helped in my development as a player.”

Lovgren tallied a goal and assist in the first half — Freeport had an 8-0 lead at intermission — before exploding with three goals and three assists in the second half.

“Definitely a breakout game for her,” Turchick said.

The Yellowjackets (3-3, 2-1) have never made the WPIAL playoffs. They’re confident they will reach the promised land this year.

Freeport only won six games all of last season.

“I know we can get there. There’s a different feel to this team,” Edwards said.

“We’re so much better than a year ago,” Lovgren said in agreement.

The Yellowjackets got on the board less than a minute into Tuesday’s game when Scarlett Sather intercepted a Knoch pass in front of the Knights’ net and whistled a shot past goalkeeper Abigail Sleigher. Edwards scored four of her goals in the first half.

Sleigher made 15 saves for Knoch (1-3, 1-2). The Knights’ lone goal was scored by Sofia Barnes midway through the third quarter.

Sophia Patton scored two goals for Freeport. Kyleigh Rogers added a single tally. Glass did not score a goal Tuesday but had three assists.

Freeport returns to action Thursday at Chartiers Valley. Knoch travels to Blackhawk that day.
