Donald ‘Reed’ Caldwell Jr.
Donald “Reed” Caldwell Jr., 67, of Evans City, passed away Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, at home, in the care of hospice, from the debilitating effects of ALS.
Born Aug. 18, 1958, in Zelienople, he was the oldest son of the late Donald R. and Dolores Shannon Caldwell.
Reed loved building material sales work and his customers. He was a wealth of knowledge and a dedicated employee. He spent the last 14 years devoted to H.P. Starr Lumber in Evans City before taking a medical retirement in 2024. He was previously employed at Dambaugh Lumber for 32 years.
Reed’s salesmanship earned all expenses paid trips to Disney, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Hawaii, the coast of Spain, France and Italy — creating lasting memories with his family.
Reed’s passion was golfing, but unfortunately, ALS stole that from him years before his diagnosis. While he enjoyed all sports, he often recalled fond memories of playing ball as a kid growing up — remembering how his mom had to carry his birth certificate to games to prove his age.
Later in life, he could be heard proudly cheering on his sons when they played as well.
Along with his parents, Reed was preceded in death by his mother in-law, Sally J. Long; brother in-law, Richard Morgan; nephew, Zachery M. Morgan; and beloved pets.
Missing him dearly will be his wife, Cindy L. (Long) Caldwell; his sons, Donald R. III (Mary), of Evans City, Denver R. (Chelsea), of Edinburg, and Edison R. (Rebecca) Caldwell, of Penn Hills; his beloved granddogs, Bodie and Wilbur; and grandcat, Waldo.
He is also survived by his brothers, Alan and Brian (Tracy) Caldwell; his former sister-in-law, Linda Surdy; his father-in-law, Roy E. Long; his wife’s siblings, Roy (Barb) Long, Sally Morgan, Shelly (Carl) Harlan and Dayne E. Long; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
