Falcons ousted by Clarion

The A-C Valley girls volleyball team was ousted from the District 9 Class A playoffs on Thursday night after suffering a 3-0 quarterfinal loss to Clarion.

The eighth-seeded Falcons gave Clarion trouble in the opening set and built a 22-18 lead. However, the top-seeded Bobcats responded with seven straight points for a 25-22 win and cruised to the sweep by scores of 25-10 and 25-12.

Makayli Terwilliger led A-C Valley with six kills and one block. Morgan Cratty added four kills and two blocks; Jessica Callender also tallied four kills.

Melanie Lewis recorded nine assists and eight service points, while Sadie Longo distributed six assists and three blocks. Katie Stumpner chipped in three kills and 10 digs.

The Falcons finish the season with a 12-6 record and figure to have a promising future with several underclassmen.

“We’re young,” said A-C Valley coach Doug Knox. “I’m pleased with the girls. We had a good season.”

North Clarion 3, Union 1 — The No. 13 Damsels were ousted in the District 9 Class A quarterfinals with a defeat to the No. 5 Wolves.

Further details were not available Thursday night.

Hockey

Seneca Valley scored three goals in the second period and added one more in the third to secure a 4-2 victory over Mt. Lebanon on Thursday.

Chris Marziotto led the way for the Raiders (1-1) with the game-winning goal and two assists.

Peter Kipin tallied a goal and an assist, while Brendan MacFarlane and Spencer Schutte also scored for Seneca. Devin Dezaren-Sroka recorded an assist.

The Raiders outshot Mt. Lebanon by a 34-28 margin, as Tanner Pfeffer registered 26 saves to earn the win in net.
