CRANBERRY TWP — A New York duo tried to make a “smart” getaway with new phones.

Police say Edgar Arias-Mateo, 26, of the Bronx, N.Y., and Marleni R. Tavarez, 23, of New York City, tried to take four iPhone 7s from the local AT&T store through fraudulent purchases on the afternoon of Jan. 18.

Arias-Mateo told police he was in the area to visit family, but could not say where they were, according to police reports. He was in his vehicle when questioned by police.

Tavarez was in the store trying to place the phones on an account she did not have permission to use, police reports state.

Police say someone had replaced one of the account holders with Tavarez so she could add the new phones to the victim’s existing account without having to pay for them herself.

The phones were valued at $850 each.

Tavarez was arrested and told police she came with Arias-Mateo from New York.

“He told her to give her information and to add the new phones to the existing accounts,” the report states.

Tavarez also told police Arias-Mateo works at a phone store in New York. The latter had three smart phones in his possession at the time of his arrest.

“She (Tavarez) stated that he (Arias-Mateo) told her that he would give her $100 for every phone she got for him,” the police report states.

Arias-Mateo faces four felony charges, including counts of conspiracy, identity theft, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

His bail was set at $75,000, but was decreased to $25,000 at his preliminary hearing Friday, when he waived the charges to court.

He remains in Butler County Prison as of this morning

Tavarez had her charges withdrawn. However, she pleaded guilty to one summary charge of disorderly conduct in her preliminary hearing Friday and is not in prison.
