Man killed in Friday crash studied exercise science at SRU

University offers support to students affected by loss

The 18-year-old who died Friday morning, Feb. 6, in a vehicle crash between the Zelienople and Evans City exits on Interstate 79 was a first-year exercise science major at Slippery Rock University.

The Butler County Coroner’s Office said Friday afternoon that Evan Gingo, of Pittsburgh, died Friday morning as a result of the crashes.

In a letter to students sent Friday, SRU’s vice president of student affairs, David Wilmes, said the university has services for students, faculty and staff who are affected by Gingo’s death.

“We mourn this tragic loss and extend our deepest condolences to Evan’s family, friends classmates and professors,” the letter said. “As a campus community, we join together in offering comfort and support to one another.”

Over the weekend, students could submit a request through the university’s Care Report system for support, and on Monday, students can call the SRU Counseling Center or the dean of students, the letter said.

The Friday crashes were reported just after 10:15 a.m. in the northbound lane at mile marker 84 in Jackson Township, according to Butler County Emergency Services. The lanes in both directions were described as a “sheet of ice.”

Nine people were taken to hospitals with injuries from the crashes, police said.
