When it comes to celebrating the Fourth of July on the 250th anniversary of the nation, Slippery Rock Borough Mayor Jondavid Longo said he plans to make it the biggest celebration of the holiday yet.

“Our goal is multifaceted. We are planning to adorn downtown with different decor and bunting,” he said. “We’ll also be growing our fireworks celebration, as we’ve done every year.”

Celebrations will be held on Slippery Rock’s Main Street and at Slippery Rock Community Park and will prominently feature the “Grand Old Flag,” a 40-foot-by-80-foot American flag that flies above the area.

Street vendors, live entertainment, games, activities and more throughout the day will lead to the “largest fireworks display in Slippery Rock’s history,” according to the event’s Facebook listing.

In conjunction with the borough and Slippery Rock Parks and Recreation’s plans, the Slippery Rock Semiquincentennial Independence Day Commission, a multiorganizational board dedicated to helping plan, raise funds for and promote the borough’s event, was established in January.

Individuals and businesses that join the commission pledge to strive to raise $10,000 in donations. So far, Longo said about 10 businesses and a handful of individuals have joined the commission by pledging funds or organizing their own ways to raise them.
