Chappell gets 2nd in state

SV's 120-pounder edged in finals, 4-2

HERSHEY — Seneca Valley did not produce a state champion Saturday at the PIAA Wrestling Championships.

The Raiders did come away with a positive performance — and an extremely bright future.

“We've got three state placers coming back for their senior year.” SV coach Kevin Wildrick said. “And we nearly had a fourth. We're all excited about that.”

Dylan Chappell (45-5) placed second at Class AAA 120 pounds, dropping a 4-2 decisdion to Will Betancourt of Manheim Central in the title match. Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (42-5) took fourth at 132 pounds, losing by ultimate tiebreaker to Stroudsburg's Patrick Noonan in the semifinals and dropping a 6-2 decision to Greater Latrobe's Gabe Willochell in the consolation finals.

Antonio Amelio placed eighth at 145 pounds. Chanz Shearer fell one win short of placing at 138.

All four Seneca Valley wrestlers are juniors this year.

“We'll come back next year, re-focus and try getting out here to states again,” Chappell said. “We're all getting better.”

Knoch's Guy DeLeonardis at Class AAA 160 pounds and Slippery Rock's Vito Pilosi at Class AA 182 pounds were eliminated during the consolation round.

Chappell ended the tournament as a PIAA runner-up for the second successive season. He did not allow a point in his first three tourney bouts — winning 1-0, 1-0 and 3-0, the latter match over Nathan Lucier of Coatesville in the semifinals — and entered the third period of the championship match in a scoreless tie with Betancourt.

“People will criticize hm, say he isn't scoring very much,” Wildrick said of Chappell. “But he didn't allow anything. You get out here, it's all about doing what you need to do to advance.”

Betancourt scored a reversal and two back points on Chappell in the third period to grab a 4-0 lead. Chappell got two of those points back on a reversal of his own with just under 40 seconds left.

Resuming the match from the top position, Chappell was unable to do any further damage.

“He wasn't gonna let me turn him,” Chappell said. “At that point, he was in defensive mode in order to win the match.”

Herrera-Rondon entered the tournament as a two-time state champion. His bid for a third straight title ended with the ultimate tiebreaker loss.

“He (Noonan) chose to go on top for the (30-second) tiebreaker,” Wildrick said. “He was able to ride out Alejandro for the win.

“He came back to win his next match (3-0 over Cole Hamet of Waynesburg) to get to the consolation finals. It's hard to come back mentally from a tough semifinal loss like that.

“That 132-pound bracket was loaded. The top four kids are nationally-ranked wrestlers,” Wildrick added.

Amelio dropped a 6-3 decision to Antonio Petrucelli of Owen J. Roberts in the seventh-eighth place match.
