Patrick Ratay
Patrick Elmer Ratay, a true staple of Pittsburgh’s South Side and a longtime dedicated employee of Heinz, passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2025. After retiring and spending the majority of his life on the South Side, Pat spent his later years as a resident of Passavant Community in Zelienople.
To many, he was simply “Hoagie” or “Hoagie Boy,” a nickname that stuck with him since the 1980s, back when he was active on the CB radio. Even after moving north to Zelienople, his heart remained on Carson Street. Whether he was grabbing a coffee at “the doughnut shop,” or ordering an Original at McCoy’s, Pat was a constant, friendly presence in the neighborhood.
While Pat did not have children of his own, he was a legendary figure to his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. “Uncle Pat” leaves them with a lifetime of cherished memories, defined by his silly sense of humor. He will be deeply missed and remembered most for his gentle soul and the kindness he extended to everyone he met.
Patrick leaves behind to cherish his memory, his brothers, Eugene Ratay (Cathy), Edward Ratay (Margie) and John Ratay (Sharon); his sister, Carol O’Mahoney (the late Richard); and his nieces and nephews, Douglas Ratay, Emily Ratay, Owen Ratay, Christopher J. Ratay, Owen Ratay, Landon Ratay, Loretta Greer, Valerie Cleveland, Jason Cleveland, Debbie D’Onofrio, Terry Visco, Marcus Lenkner, Kelley O’Mahoney, Lisa Steiner, Jason Steiner, Laci Steiner, Jason Ratay, JJ Ratay, Layla, Dax Ratay, Colt Ratay, Theresa A. Ratay, Jeffrey P. Ratay, Madison Ratay, Brooke Ratay, Michael Ratay, Savannah Murphy, Lee Michael Ratay, and Brian Ratay.
In addition to his parents, Patrick was preceded in death by his sisters, Anne Ratay, JoAnn Ratay and Charlotte Conrad; his brothers, Charles “Sonny” Ratay Jr. and Billy Ratay; and his nephews, Matthew Ratay, Charley Ratay and Casey Cleveland.
