John Ward

Ward

John Richard Ward, 80, of Butler, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer.

Son of the late Jack and Helen Ward of Sarver, John was a proud graduate of Knoch High School, Class of 1965. He went on to earn a degree in civil engineering from Clemson University in 1968. Shortly after, he met the love of his life, Candice (Popowitz) Ward, and together they shared 55 devoted and joyful years of marriage.

John’s professional career began with Michael Baker in Beaver, followed by many years at Jones & Laughlin Steel and Zinc Corporation in Monaca, from where he eventually retired.

Family was at the center of John’s life. He loved teaching his two daughters how to water ski and snow ski and later took great pride in sharing those same passions with his four grandsons. Whether skiing, hunting, or simply spending time together, John treasured every moment with them.

An avid deer hunter, John deeply enjoyed time spent at the family hunting camp with his father, brothers, nephews and close friends. Another passion was winemaking, something he truly loved sharing with others. He proudly showcased the many blue ribbons he earned at local competitions for his homemade wine.

In addition to his wife, Candice, John is survived by his daughters, Megan (Ward) Celentano (Tony) and Tamara (Ward) Panzino (Kevin); and his beloved grandsons, Dominic Panzino, AJ Celentano, Nash Panzino and Nicholas Celentano.

He is also survived by his siblings, Jim Ward, of Memphis, Jeffrey Ward (Peni), of Sarver, Kathy (Ward) Zigo (Al), of Freeport, and Christine Ward, of Shady Side, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy (Ward) Engelkes; and his brother, Daniel Ward.

John will be remembered for his infectious laugh, generous spirit and deep love for life and family. He leaves behind a legacy of joy and memories that will be cherished forever.
