Girl, 2, dies after mauling by pit bull

WEST MIFFLIN — Police said a 2-year-old girl has died after being mauled by a pit bull. Police said the dog attacked Paylynn Devaugh inside a home in West Mifflin around 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

The girl was pronounced dead at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Police said Paylynn lived in Forest Hills. An autopsy was scheduled for today. The investigation is continuing.

Suspect flees via frozen river, caught

PITTSBURGH — Police said a burglary suspect was captured after trying to escape by fleeing across a frozen river.

Officers responded to a burglary call at a Pittsburgh convenience store at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

They were told that a man had been seen climbing out of a broken window, stuffing lottery tickets into his coat before fleeing.

Police said he was later seen running along the river walk and then onto the ice. Near the Veterans Bridge, he turned and ran across the iced-over Allegheny River. Police said the 25-year-old suspect reached the North Shore, where he was arrested.
