Adams Township police vehicles are stationed outside of Mars High School on Wednesday after the school received two bomb threats this week.

ADAMS TWP — The second bomb threat in as many days lead to an evacuation of Mars High School Wednesday, with district officials saying they will pursue charges if they identify the person responsible for the threats.

According to a letter from Superintendent Wesley Shipley, officials learned of the threat Wednesday morning and evacuated the school as a precaution. Students were sent to the middle school as Adams Township police did a sweep of the high school.

After no threats were found and the school was deemed safe, students returned to the building at about 12:15 p.m., according to Shipley. All evening activities continued as scheduled.

A similar incident occurred Tuesday, when officials found a note on the floor with an unspecified threat.

Students from the high school were evacuated and taken to the elementary school Tuesday until police deemed the school safe. Students returned to the building at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday and were dismissed as usual.

Shipley said the response to the incidents was similar, and the investigation into both is ongoing by the district and police.

District policy for students making such threats indicates they could face an expulsion hearing. District policy on terrorist threats outlines a threat as being one communicated either directly or indirectly. The threat can be toward a person or an action that causes the evacuation of a building or facility and results in, “serious public inconvenience with reckless disregard of the risk of causing such terror or inconvenience.”

If a student is expelled for making threats, he or she would be required to provide, “competent and credible evidence” that they do not pose a risk to others before being readmitted. They also would be subject to random searches if a return is permitted, the policy states.

The district also has the ability to seek restitution for costs incurred for evacuation of property, including transportation, maintenance and administrative costs, the policy states.

Shipley said the district would take legal action if and when a person is found to have made threats.

“We will press charges to the full extent of the law,” he said.
