American Legion leader stops in Zelienople

Veteran Joe Loftin, left, of Slippery Rock talks with Daniel Dellinger of Vienna, Va., National Commander of the American Legion, during the commander's visit Wednesday to Post 474 in Zelienople. It is a tradition for the national commander to make a three-day tour of Pennsylvania.

ZELIENOPLE — As part of a three-spot tour in Pennsylvania, the American Legion national commander spoke Wednesday at Legion Post 474 here.

Daniel Dellinger discussed his written testimony regarding the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs 2015 budget.

He also talked about the volunteer efforts of Legion members and of expanding the Legion's membership.

John Prichard, commander of the Legion's 26th district, which covers Butler, Beaver and Lawrence counties, said Dellinger was well received by the 150 people who heard him talk.

Prichard said, “He took the time to talk to the people personally. He is a very likable and easygoing person.”

Dellinger, who spoke in eastern Pennsylvania Monday and in central Pennsylvania Tuesday, was a guest at the White House ceremony Tuesday when 24 Army soldiers from World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War were awarded the Medal of Honor.

Prichard, who joined the Legion in 1984, said it is a tradition for the national commander to make a three-day tour of Pennsylvania.

Prichard added that Dellinger, who is a Washington Redskins football fan, was given a Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towel during his visit.
