Judge sentences man to prison in chase, crash

A Butler man was sentenced Thursday to prison for leading at least three police departments on a car chase in 2018 and intentionally crashing into an occupied trooper's cruiser, all while a minor was in tow.

David R. Coleman, 53, of Butler was sentenced to a total of 27 to 54 months in prison for aggravated assault and fleeing an officer, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

Coleman's lawyer, public defender Joseph Smith, told Judge William Shaffer during the sentencing that Coleman has been on house arrest for more than two years and hasn't violated his pretrial supervision. He also explained that the reason this case has taken so long is because Coleman has “many medical issues” that prevented him from attending court proceedings in the past.

Shaffer also ordered Coleman to pay more than $11,000 in restitution to State Police Troop D.

Police thought Coleman was drunk at the time of the chase, but driving under the influence charges were withdrawn after toxicology reports came back mostly clean, according to earlier reports.

Police said they found an open beer can in the vehicle's cup holder, but Coleman's toxicology report showed a blood-alcohol level of about 0.01 percent. A level of at least 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

The chase began in Butler around 4:30 p.m. March 30, 2018, when Coleman allegedly ran a stop sign.

A city police officer activated his emergency lights, but Coleman continued driving his sport utility vehicle into Butler Township.

State police and Butler Township police were called to assist.

Coleman eventually made his way onto Whitestown Road in Butler Township and traveled around a marked city police car.

He intentionally rammed a cruiser driven by Trooper Kevin Goss, according to court documents. Goss was injured and taken to Butler Memorial Hospital. Reached by phone on Thursday, Goss said he did not have permission to comment on the case.

Following the crash, which also damaged a home's mailbox and stone wall, police found that a 13-year-old boy, a relative of Coleman's, was riding in the vehicle.
