Butler girls basketball routs Erie to start 3-0; Emily Matz powers Moniteau to first win: Roundup
Butler girls basketball had no trouble dispatching Erie in a non-league game Wednesday night, rolling to a 41-17 road win at Erie High School.
The Golden Tornado improve to 3-0 in the early going. Jordan Ryan came off the bench to lead the team with 10 points, including two second-quarter 3-pointers. Malina McElroy and Emily Hoffer each scored seven points.
Butler stays on the road Friday against New Castle.
Moniteau 41, Cochranton 36 — Emily Matz had a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals, leading the Warriors (1-2) to their first win of the season. Saige Brunst and Alyssa Thompson each had 11 points.
After scoring just two points in the third quarter to fall behind 29-25, Metz and Thompson sparked a rally with a combined 15 points in the final frame to mount a comeback win.
Freeport 43, Keystone Oaks 34 — The Yellowjackets slammed the door on the Golden Eagles by outscoring them 12-3 in the final quarter.
Nia DiSanti scored 12 points in the win and Lilly Holloway added 10.
Carson Kane’s 19 points led a quartet of Freeport players scoring in double figures, but the Yellowjackets dropped a 70-64 decision to Derry.
Owen Westendorf added 14 for Freeport, Bryson Paga 13 and Gavin Tola 11.
Mars won three of four bouts that were contested against North Catholic, rolling to a 67-4 non-section victory heavy in forfeits.
Olympic Serrao (145 pounds) and Liam Corcoran (189) won by identical 18-3 technifical falls in the first period, and Phoenix Ross (215) beat Andrew Baird by a 3-1 decision. North’s Victor Wagner (127) won the Trojans’ only points with a 9-0 major decision.
Knoch 42, Woodland Hills 35 — Jarrett Crowe (133 pounds), Owen Layhew (145), Brad McGowan (152) and Keegan Orris (160) and Karson Welsh earn pin fall victories for the Knights.
A night after the season-opener was postponed by snow, Knoch opened the year 1-0 with a 42-12 win over Woodland Hills.
Kenna Watson won by pin in the second period. The Knights racked up six wins by forfeit.
Seneca Valley swept Riverside in a dual-meet, the girls winning 115-47 and the boys 110-66. No individual results were available.
