BlueSox, Sliders get splits
Butler pitcher Anthony Caringi hurled eight innings of shut-out baseball, earning the win in a 9-0 decision over host Richmond (Ind.) in Prospect League play Sunday.
Caringi struck out six and did not walk a batter while allowing just three hits.
Anthony Battaglia pitched a scoreless ninth frame to close the game.
BlueSox third baseman Tyler Detmer homered and scored twice, Taylor Schmidt and Matt Berezo both collected two base hits.
Butler High graduate Cody Herald doubled and scored a run for Butler (3-3).
The win came a day after the BlueSox dropped a 6-5, 12-inning final to the RiverRats.
Battaglia was the fifth Butler pitcher used and took the loss after allowing a run-scoring sacrifice fly to Garrett Ruckel and a solo home run to Kyle Leslie.
Grove City High product Alex Miklos and Schmidt both had three hits. The former’s day included a double and home run.
The Slippery Rock Sliders (2-3) also rebounded from a defeat.
After a 5-0 loss to Chillicothe Saturday, the Sliders defeated the Paints 6-5 on Sunday.
The victory featured three hits, including a double, from designated hitter Storm Wilson.
The win on the mound went to David Wilson, who pitched two innings of relief after starter Zach Place surrendered four earned runs in three innings.
Following David Wilson’s outing, Ryan Ahrens, Alex Watson and Spencer Applebach combined to throw four scoreless frames.
In Saturday’s loss, the Sliders tallied eight hits, but left seven runners on base.
Applebach shouldered the defeat.
