As concerns grew over food insecurity during what became the longest government shutdown in United States history, members of a local church took it upon themselves to help out in a major way.

The Cranberry Community United Presbyterian Church gathered more than 2,100 pounds of food for local families facing food insecurity.

Through its Share the Harvest Food Bank initiative, families involved in the church’s Christian-based preschool program contributed more than 1,200 pounds, while congregation members added another 900 pounds.

“There is food insecurity in our communities and it’s really exciting to see how others stepped up in such a big way to provide food for people who are in need,” said church member Cindy Miller, who helped organize the drive.

The food was weighed Sunday morning and delivered Monday to Inspired Hearts and Hands and the Lighthouse Foundation, two organizations that distribute meals and pantry items to underserved families across the region.

While the church conducts monthly food collections, leaders said they made more of a push in recent weeks due to supply shortages and an increased need.

“We were hoping to reach a ton and we reached our goal,” Miller said. “It’s a blessing to be able to bless so many families in our community.”
