Broken pole knocks out power for 1,400

About 1,400 customers were affected Tuesday by a power outage that hit parts of Butler and Center townships.

The outage happened at 10:40 a.m. and affected 1,100 customers in Butler Township and about 300 in Center Township.

Todd Meyers, West Penn Power spokesman, said that the power outage was caused by a broken pole near North Duffy Road in Butler Township.

Crews worked into the afternoon to reconfigure the system so that most customers had power and only the customers near the broken pole were affected.

A few traffic lights at intersections were out.

Butler Township Police Chief John Hays said that his officers monitored the situation, and that the outage did not cause any major traffic incidents.

The Target store in Butler Commons had reduced power for about two hours Tuesday morning, and the nearby Walmart was out for almost three hours.

Target has a back up generator which allowed the store to remain open, although with minor lighting.

Walmart was closed from roughly 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. according to Kyle Beveridge, the front-end manager.

VA Butler Healthcare was not affected by the outage, said spokesman Amanda Kurtz.
