Fanetta Jane Wareham Shaw, 86, of Maltby Avenue, Slippery Rock, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at Concordia Lutheran Home in Cabot.

Born in Sagamore, Armstrong County, March 7, 1922, she was a daughter of Elmer Clair Wareham and Ida Pearl Carroll Wareham.

She was a member of the Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock.

Fanetta, a retired teacher and administrator, received a bachelor's degree in education at Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana (Pa.) University, in 1944. In 1948, she completed a Master's of Education Administration at Pennsylvania State College, now Penn State University, where she continued with postgraduate study.

She began her career as director of the Laboratory School at Mansfield State College. A master teacher, she served as director of the Elementary Laboratory School at Slippery Rock State College from 1953 until 1966. During her tenure, she supervised young teachers, many of whom she continued to mentor throughout their careers. When offered a teaching position at the university, she resigned to return to teaching. She was named a Professor Emeritus at Slippery Rock. She became supervisor of the Slippery Rock Area Elementary Schools, a position from which she later resigned to return to the classroom. Throughout her career, she specialized in teaching grades 2 through 4.

She was loved and admired by many of her students, student teachers and colleagues. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa honorary education fraternity.

Fanetta traveled extensively, visiting every major continent. She loved gardening, the outdoors, reading and staying current with friends and family via the internet. Although she had no children of her own, her adventurous spirit, kindness, sense of humor and caring made her a good friend and mentor to many and beloved and cherished by her family.

Surviving are three nieces, Jane Thomas and her husband, William, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Carol Molloy and her husband, Kevin, of Harrisburg and Wendy Wareham of Hermitage; four nephews, Kenneth "Skip" Wareham and his wife, Mary, of Santa Monica, Calif., Thomas Wareham of State College, John Monroe and his wife, Debra, of Rural Valley and Barry Wareham and his wife, Becky, of Littlestown; two sisters-in-law, Reba Wareham of Pleasant Gap and Betty Jo Wareham-Sahler of Deland, Fla.; and a number of great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Elmer Wareham and Duane Wareham; and a sister, Avis Monroe.

<B>SHAW</B> — Services for Fanetta Jane Wareham Shaw, who died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Center Presbyterian Church, Slippery Rock, with the Rev. James E. Boos officiating. Burial will be at the Sagamore Cemetery, Armstrong County.Friends will be received in the social hall of the church following the service.Memorial contributions may be given to the Center Presbyterian Church, 211 Center St. Slippery Rock, PA for its memorial fund.Arrangements are being handled by the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, Slippery Rock.
