Nia DiSanti’s clutch goal lifts Freeport girls soccer into WPIAL Class 2A final over Quaker Valley

HAMPTON TWP — The goal did come. Freeport just had to wait an extra 10 minutes to net it.

To Camryn Woods’ surprise, Ella McConville’s offering at No. 3 Quaker Valley goalkeeper Ava Hajok dropped in front of her during the 59th minute of Tuesday night’s WPIAL Class 2A girls soccer semifinal game.

With the defense’s spotlight on her, the junior forward poked it over to senior Nia DiSanti, who prodded it in for a goal that finally dented the scoreboard in what became a 2-0 win for the No. 2 Yellowjackets over the defending district champions at Hampton High School.

“I make sure every play I’m hustling towards the keeper, because you never know when they’re gonna drop the ball and bobble the ball,” Woods said. “And, obviously, I was just right there when it happened. ... I kicked it and it deflected, and I just saw Nia there and she just finished.”

DiSanti saw three defenders and Hajok gravitate toward Woods.

“I knew Cam has the talent,” DiSanti said. “She’s gonna slot that over in the gap, and I was ready to go.”

’Jackets (18-1) sophomore forward Cecilia Schlegel added an insurance marker with under 10 minutes to go in regulation, helping send her side to Highmark Stadium to face No. 8 Burrell, 2-0 winners over No. 4 Mt. Pleasant in the other semifinal, at a site and time to be determined Wednesday morning.

In the 49th minute, Woods ran it toward Hajok before the two tumbled into one another in the box. The ball, though, kept rolling toward the goal line. Quakers (15-2-1) junior midfielder Madeline Gatehouse raced in to clear it out of harm’s way at the last second, keeping the contest scoreless for the moment.

“I knew one was coming after that,” Woods said.

DiSanti echoed Woods’ sentiment, saying the near-goal fired her team up.

“It just brought us home,” DiSanti said.

“I couldn’t tell where it was,” Freeport coach Steve Kucic said. “That’s kinda been the story this year for us. We’ve dominated basically every game we’ve played, and we’ve had some squeakers just because we couldn’t find a goal or we couldn’t find dangerous opportunities.

“But we always preach just to keep going at it. Don’t get discouraged ... and good things are gonna happen.”

The win marked Freeport’s 17th in a row. The lone blemish on the ’Jackets schedule was a 1-0 loss against Butler on Aug. 27.

Quaker Valley notched just one shot on goal in the second half.
