As Karns City girls soccer routs Kane in District 9 quarterfinal, Hanna Dailey celebrates a milestone

KARNS CITY — Hanna Dailey reached her milestone early, then enjoyed her teammates sharing the wealth.

Karns City’s senior midfielder scored three of the Gremlin’s first five goals Tuesday night — giving her 100 for her career — as KC rolled past Kane 11-1 in a District 9 Class 1A girls soccer quarterfinal at Diehl Stadium.

The second-seeded Gremlins (16-3) won their seventh straight game and have outscored the opposition 64-3 during that stretch. The defending 1A district champion will host No. 3-seed Brookville, a 3-1 winner over Port Allegany, in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“The girls play together and at a quick pace,” KC coach Tracy Dailey said. “The goals are coming from all over our lineup. We’ve been focusing on five or six set plays this season, and we’ve been executing them well. It’s been great to see.”

Besides coaching her team to the lopsided win, Dailey was able to watch her daughter become the seventh player in program history to reach the century mark in goals.

Hanna scored KC’s first goal only 37 seconds into the game, kicking the ball in off a corner kick from Sophia Bonetto. She scored her team’s second tally in the fourth minute, breaking in alone and easily sliding the ball past freshman goalkeeper Brooklyn Bressler.

When Hanna knocked in her third goal — coming in the 12th minute — she had her milestone tally and the Gremlins had a 5-1 lead. They took a 6-1 lead into intermission.

“I’m glad it (No. 100) happened early because, yeah, I was thinking about it,” Hanna said. “I didn’t want to get off my game or the team get off our game because of this.

“A hundred goals is something I’m proud of, but it doesn’t happen without my teammates. They’re the ones most responsible for it.”

Coach Dailey agreed with her daughter.

“She’s joining an impressive list ... Emily LoPresti, Brittni Grenninger, Megan McCartney, on and on,” the coach said. “Doing this as a midfielder says a lot for our team. A lot of her goals are team goals.

“Her teammates set up Hanna, and she sets up her teammates.”

Hanna had plenty of company in the scorebook on this night. Junior forward Phoebe Brandon joined her in tallying three goals while junior forward Bree O’Donnell added a pair. Sophomore midfielder Katelyn VanDyke, senior forward Layla Colsey and senior defender Bonetto added goals.

Bonetto set up two goals off corner kicks. Karns City had a 23-3 edge in shots on net and took 11 corner kicks. Kane (9-8-1) had no corner kicks.

“The key for us is to never stop moving,” Brandon said. “We’re used to playing together, and our communication helps. We always want to play at the same pace.”

That’s regardless of the score.

“This is the playoffs,” Coach Dailey said. “Now’s not the time to get into any bad habits. No matter the score, we’re going to play our game. Katelyn just got back from a torn ACL (last basketball season) this week. Tonight was the first extensive playing time she’s had.”

Aubrey Misnic scored Kane’s lone goal in the game’s 23rd minute. The Wolves reached the playoffs for the first time in three years.

“It was good for us to play a team of this quality,” Kane coach Brittany Sprankle said. “This was a learning experience for us. Our goal every game is the same. Keep playing hard and never give in.”
