Callery sends letter to Seneca Valley expressing concern about proposed construction
At least one municipality located within the Seneca Valley School district is raising the alarm about the district’s proposed construction project for the intermediate high school.
Callery Borough Council voted during their meeting on Monday, Oct. 6, to send a letter to the school district expressing concern about the potential financial implications of the district’s proposed $165 million renovation, which would include the construction of a new performing arts center and a three-story structure with 39 classrooms.
The letter, which calls for the school board to table the project, was attributed to council president Rose Marie Wirtz and addressed directly to Eric DiTullio, president of the school board.
“Council is deeply concerned with the financial impact this project will have on Callery’s current and future residents and taxpayers,” reads the letter, which was obtained by the Butler Eagle through a right-to-know request. “Moreover, council does not believe that the School Board has provided the public with sufficient facts, financial data, project options and projections for student population growth and changing educational needs that justify this extravagant expenditure of taxpayer dollars.”
According to the letter, the project, if it were to go through as planned, would add $156 million to the school district’s debt load of $97 million.
DiTullio did not respond to a request for comment from the Butler Eagle.
