Police: 3 accused of disarming security tags in Butler Township fitting room
The three men accused of stealing almost $1,500 in merchandise from Dick’s Sporting Goods in Butler Township were heard disarming security tags in a fitting room, police said.
Lawrence Edward Anderson III, 20; Dwayne Jamiere Howard, 18; and Darnell Coffer Jr., 18, all of Youngstown, Ohio, were all charged on Tuesday, Oct. 7, with two felony counts of retail theft, felony conspiracy to commit retail theft and misdemeanor corruption of minors following the Oct. 6 incident.
Police said they were called for reports of five people committing retail theft at the store. An employee told police three of the men involved were outside on the side of the building.
Police said employees found a backpack which was not sold at the store containing 10 clothing items valued at $1,210 inside a fitting room.
Police encountered Anderson in a vehicle in the parking lot. Police said he was wearing two zip-up jackets from the store valued at $275 that were not paid for.
Police said an employee saw Anderson and Coffer grab clothing items and take them into fitting rooms in the area the backpack was found. Police said there were security tags on the ground which were removed from the clothing items.
Howard was seen entering the store with the backpack and taking it to a fitting room. Police said an employee at one point removed the backpack from the fitting room and took it to the front desk, but Howard moved the backpack to a fitting room again.
The store requested $1,485 in restitution.
All three individuals are being held in Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail. Their preliminary hearings are scheduled at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell.
