EVANS CITY — Food, friends, fun and fellowship await those who attend the 30th annual Evans City Oktoberfest this weekend.

Marlene Domhoff, longtime coordinator of the event, said Oktoberfest hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday on Wahl Avenue and North Jackson Street.

More than 50 vendors will sell crafts, jewelry and other items. Food vendors will offer hamburgers, hot sausage, funnel cakes and more.

Domhoff and her crew have put together more than 50 baskets for the ticket auction at the fire hall on North Jackson Street.

She said one basket is in the shape of a sleigh and contains Christmas items. Another basket is filled with goodies and useful everyday items. Steelers, Pirates and Penguins baskets also will be available.

A separate basket will be raffled off that contains more than $200 in gift cards donated by local businesses.

“They are things you would use from Evans City and Zelienople,” Domhoff said of the gift cards.

The traditional all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday on the first floor of the fire hall. The cost for the breakfast is $5, and proceeds will benefit the volunteer fire department.

New this year, said Domhoff, is the Amish doughnut vendor who normally sets up at the Butler Farm Market each Saturday.

“The Farm Market gave them up for Saturday and they’re coming to Evans City,” she said.

The doughnut vendor will be at Oktoberfest on Friday and Saturday, as the Amish do not work on Sunday, Domhoff said.

Entertainers will once again perform on the stage across from the fire hall, and some new acts are planned.

Domhoff said the Dawn Savage band will play country rock and original songs from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

“The drummer, Craig Davison Jr., is from Evans City,” she said.

Ventriloquist Cindy Spect of Zelienople will offer family entertainment at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and the Allegheny Fiddlers from North Allegheny High School will perform at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Another new act this year is Johnny Calinger, a keyboardist and singer who impressed Domhoff at another event.

“I thought it was a whole group playing,” she said.

A parade will proceed down Main Street at 11 a.m. Saturday. Lineup for judging will be at 10 a.m. on Jefferson Street.

Domhoff said seven Shriners units will march in the parade, as well as many other floats, groups, bands and emergency vehicles.

“There are 25 entrants that we know of, but there are people who just come that morning with their application,” Domhoff said. “Of course, were not going to turn anyone away.”

Staff members from NexTier, the parade sponsor, will serve as judges.

Another popular feature of Oktoberfest, the annual quilt show, will return this year. More than 150 quilts will be on display at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church as well as the Evans City Public Library.

The quilts will be judged and prizes awarded by the St. Peter’s Sowers, a sewing group at the church.

Fireworks will cap off Saturday’s revelry at 8 p.m.

“You can see them from pretty much anywhere in the borough,” Domhoff said.

The car cruise will be held as usual on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. on Main Street. The Rodfathers group will operate the cruise this year.

One new feature that Domhoff is especially excited about is this year’s community church service.

Normally held at 4 p.m. Sunday during Oktoberfest, the four churches that offer the public service asked if they could hold it at 11 a.m. on Sunday this year.

The pastors explained that the Oktoberfest event will serve as the churches’ Sunday service.

“We’re excited about that,” Domhoff said.

She invites everyone to come enjoy all that the Evans City Oktoberfest has to offer.

“It’s just good fellowship,” Domhoff said.
